September was a big month for climate news. The Global Climate Action Summit spurred a surge of commitments for a lower-carbon future. Yet within a few short weeks severe weather visited destruction on Japan, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong and the Philippines. The news in October doesn't look much better: the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 C is expected to deliver a sobering assessment. Are the commitments made to date sufficient? Carbon footprints and climate resilience —What companies in Asia should be considering? And what are the implications for COP 24 this December?

Aron Cramer, President and CEO of BSR, brings a multi-faceted, global perspective to these questions. He will debrief Global Climate Action Summit and parse rhetoric from reality on the topics of science-based targets, low-carbon power and other commitments. Rachel Fleishman, Vice Chair of the AmCham Environment & Sustainability Committee will interview Mr. Cramer and facilitate a discussion on the challenges ahead for businesses in Asia.

President & CEO of Business for Social Responsibility

Aron Cramer is recognized globally as a preeminent authority on sustainable business. In addition to leading BSR, which has grown substantially throughout his tenure as President and CEO, Aron advises senior executives at BSR’s more than 250 member companies and other global businesses on the full spectrum of social and environmental issues.

Aron joined BSR in 1995 as the founding director of its Business and Human Rights Program, and later opened BSR's Paris office in 2002, where he worked until becoming President and CEO in 2004. Aron serves on advisory boards to CEOs at Barrick Gold, Marks & Spencer, SAP, and Unilever North America, and he facilitates the AXA CEO advisory panel. He is also a director of the Natural Capital Coalition and We Mean Business as well as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Consumption.

Aron speaks frequently at leading business forums, and is widely quoted in top-tier media such as the Financial Times, Le Figaro (France), The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. He is co-author of the book Sustainable Excellence: The Future of Business in a Fast-Changing World, which spotlights innovative sustainability strategies that drive business success.

Prior to joining BSR, Aron practiced law in San Francisco, and worked as a journalist at ABC News in New York. He holds a B.A. from Tufts University and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Advocacy & Sustainability Communications Corporate Affairs Asia Pacific at BASF East Asia Regional Headquarters Ltd.

Rachel Fleishman leads the regional advocacy and sustainability functions for BASF in Asia. Her aim is to engage stakeholders across the region to create chemistry for a sustainable future – building coalitions, regulatory regimes and business models which meet the needs of societies, markets and the environment. She also contributes to the continuous evolution of sustainability at BASF and speaks regularly on the topic.

Prior to joining BASF Ms. Fleishman held management positions at several government, business and non-profit organizations, including the Climate Change Business Forum, the Clinton Global Initiative, the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU, Sprint, and the Pentagon. She holds a BA from Tufts University, an MA from the University of Maryland, School of Public Affairs and an MBA from Kellogg, at Northwestern University. Ms. Fleishman is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Climate and Security in Washington, D.C and serves on the board of the United Jewish Congregation of Hong Kong.
