The War on Waste - Hong Kong's Struggle for Sustainability
Hong Kong is producing too much waste. According to a recent report for 2017, the annual total of solid waste disposed at the city’s landfills stood at 5.66 million tonnes (15,516 tonnes per day), about a third of which was recovered for recycling. As a predominantly service-oriented economy, Hong Kong lacks the industrial capabilities to reuse its recyclables in domestic production – some 90 percent were exported to other economies for further processing, mostly to mainland China. Since Beijing has put severe import restrictions on scrap paper, plastics and metals at the start of 2018, Hong Kong is in ever more urgent need of a sustainable waste management strategy.

Did You Know...
… Hong Kong's Central Plaza holds a unique record?

Hong Kong is home to many world records. Be it the longest indoor and outdoor escalator systems, the largest light and music show or the highest number of Rolls-Royce per capita – the list of Hong Kong’s (sometimes dubious) superlatives is long. While many people are well-aware of attractions such as the world’s highest bar and swimming pool on top of the ICC or Tian Tan, the biggest seated bronze Buddha statue, they might be surprised to learn that Hong Kong is also home to the highest church inside a skyscraper.
