Technology is being applied to optimise employee efficiency of workers through ever more intrusive performance monitoring and 'gamification' or ordering of behaviour according to algorithmic decision-making. E-commerce warehouses gear their employees with time-tracking scanners and invest in the development of control tools like wristbands that vibrate when employees' hands move too far away from where they are supposed to be. Smart watches track Chinese street cleaners, alerting management if they stay in the same place for too long.
According to Deloitte, 9.7 billion data records of employee-related data have been lost or stolen worldwide since 2013. And since it went into effect in 2018, consumers have filed more than 95,000 complaints relating to the EU's GDPR statute. Despite advances, legislation is not keeping up with the ethical issues raised by the large volume and variety of data collected. In addition to the damage done by data breaches, more people grow skeptical of how organisations handle their personal data.
