Celebrate the Majesty of Nature with HK Phil

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is pleased to share this exclusive opportunity with the members of the German Chamber of Commerce!

We cordially invite you to attend HK Phil's An Alpine Symphony in Images concert and a special pre-concert talk exclusive to the members of GCC with unique insights from HK Phil Chief Executive, Benedikt Fohr and photography artist Tobias Melle – who are both from Germany! HK Phil has arranged especially for members of GCC the most prominent seats to enjoy this spectacular multimedia concert with live projection of images of the Alps that play simultaneously with German composer Richard Strauss's An Alpine Symphony.

On the baton, we have HK Phil's Resident Conductor Lio Kuokman, JP who was recently awarded the Top Ten Outstanding Youth Award Hong Kong for his contributions to the music scene in Hong Kong. Also, with us is the "ravishing" Alena Baeva playing the luscious Violin Concerto by Korngold. Beginning the concert is Richard Strauss' pompous and majestic Festliches Präludium.

Remarks:

Advanced booking is required to be made before the extended deadline on Tuesday, 11 October 2022 at 12:00 noon. No walk in is accepted.
Seats are limited. Booking priority to members on a first-come, first-served basis.
GIC/GCC is closely monitoring the Covid-19 situation. Health precaution and social distancing measures will be observed. This event follows the Government's Vaccine Pass requirement. Only attendees who meet the requirement will be admitted to join this event in person.
To be considerate to others, in person participants are required to take a rapid antigen test within 24 hours before the event.

German composer Richard Strauss once boasted that he could depict even a knife and fork in music, so when he paints the full majesty of the Alps, the results are truly spectacular! First, the "ravishing" Alena Baeva plays the luscious Violin Concerto by Korngold. And then Lio Kuokman takes a supersized HK Phil on an audio-visual mountain journey of the Alps' waterfalls, glaciers and breathtaking views– all without leaving your seat thanks to the amazing photographs taken by the German Tobias Melle.

The concert runs approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes with an intermission.

Currently serving as Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) and Programme Director of the Macao International Music Festival, Lio is praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “a startling conducting talent”. He was the second prize winner of the third Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris with Audience Prize and Orchestra Prize, and he has served as the first Chinese Assistant Conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Lio has successfully collaborated with many leading orchestras across the globe. Recently he was invited as the first Chinese conductor to conduct subscription concert with the Vienna Symphony, and he also received an invitation by the French government to lead the first Saudi Arabia performance tour with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. He completed ten performances in Taiwan with NTSO, appeared at Music in PyeongChang Festival, and conducted the Season Finale concert with the HK Phil. Other collaborated orchestras including Detroit Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille, Seoul Philharmonic, NHK, Hiroshima, Tokyo Metropolitan, Kyoto Symphony, Russian National Symphony, Moscow Philharmonic, Latvian National Symphony Orchestras and more.

Lio has also participated in opera productions. Lio recently collaborated with National Taichung Theater on Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Other opera performances include collaborations with Musica Viva Hong Kong on La bohème, L’elisir d’amore, Turandot, Madama Butterfly, Carmen; and was invited by Valery Gergiev as guest conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre. As a concert pianist, Lio has collaborated with Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

Educated at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, The Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory, Lio is a founding member and President of the Macao Chamber Music Association. For his contributions to the development of arts and culture, he has received Certificate of Commendation and Medal of Cultural Merit from both governments of Hong Kong and Macao. In 2021, Lio is the recipient of the Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons award. In 2022, he is awarded Artist of the Year (Music) of the 16th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards and appointed a Justice of the Peace by the HKSAR Government.

Described as “a magnetic presence” and “a constantly fascinating sound technician” (New York Classical Review), Russian violinist Alena Baeva is considered one of the most exciting, versatile and alluring soloists active on the world stage today.

Baeva’s career as an international soloist of the highest renown has grown at an extraordinary pace over recent years. Major debuts of the 2021/2022 concert season include Alte Oper Frankfurt, Estonian Festival Orchestra, Gürzenich-Orchester Köln and Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the Tonkünstler Orchester. Other recent and forthcoming highlights include performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Orchestra Sinfónica Nazionale della RAI Torino, Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro de la RTVE, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra.

Baeva enjoys particularly strong working, touring and recording partnerships with Paavo Järvi and Vladimir Jurowski. Further conductor collaborations of note include Teodor Currentzis and Valery Gergiev, with whom Baeva has toured internationally as concerto soloist (with MusicÆterna and the Mariinsky Orchestra, respectively), as well as Andrey Boreyko, Charles Dutoit, Marek Janowski, Tomáš Netopil and Mikhail Pletnev. She also enjoys expanding musical partnerships with the young rising star conductors Alpesh Chauhan, Robert Trevino and Duncan Ward.
Chamber music has always held a special place in Baeva’s musical life. She has the pleasure of collaborating with such esteemed artists as Martha Argerich, Yuri Bashmet, Steven Isserlis, Daishin Kashimoto, Misha Maisky, Lawrence Power, Julian Steckel and Yeol-Eum Son. Her regular sonata partner is the celebrated Ukrainian pianist Vadym Kholodenko (2013 Van Cliburn Winner), with whom she has established a musical partnership of more than a decade.

Baeva holds an already vast and rapidly expanding repertoire, including over forty violin concerti and is a champion of lesser known works – with recent performances promoting such composers as Bacewicz, Karaev and Karłowicz, alongside more mainstream violin literature. She also enjoys a lasting relationship with the Orchestra of the XVIII Century, performing and recording a variety of repertoire on period instruments.
Born in Russia to a musical family, Baeva took her first violin lessons at the age of five under renowned pedagogue Olga Danilova, before going on to study in Moscow with Professor Eduard Grach at the Central School of Music and the State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. In addition to her formal education, she studied in France with Mstislav Rostropovich, in Switzerland with Seiji Ozawa, in Israel with Shlomo Mintz (at Keshet Eilon Music Center) and in Paris with Boris Garlitsky. Aged 16, Baeva won the Grand Prix at the 12th International Henryk Wieniawski Competition (2001), as well as the Prize for Best Performance of a Contemporary Work. Following this, she went on to take the Grand Prix at the Moscow International Niccolò Paganini Competition (2004), including a Special Prize allowing her to perform on the 1723 Wieniawski Stradivari for one year and was awarded both the Gold Medal and the Audience Prize at the Sendai International Violin Competition (2007).

Alena Baeva plays on the “ex-William Kroll” Guarneri del Gesù of 1738 – on generous loan from an anonymous patron, with the kind assistance of J&A Beares.

German photo artist Tobias Melle has been working in the dynamic sphere between musical and visual worlds for over 25 years.

As a musician, he has played the cello since his youth, has participated in various orchestras over many years, and has also been on stage for most of the works he has worked on photographically.

As a photographer, he prefers to seek the connection of photography with music. For his Symphonies in Images he often travels for months with camera and score in his luggage to find the right images. The outstanding feature of his works is the structurally and emotionally coherent translation of musical contexts into associative image sequences. He always performs the so composed visual voice to the orchestral sound personally and live - like a musical soloist he adapts to the conductor's interpretation.

Performances of his Symphonies in Images take place with renowned orchestras in Germany and abroad, including the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Sinfonieorchester and the NDR Radiophilharmonie under conductors such as David Zinman, Krzysztof Urbański, Antoni Wit and Eivind Gullberg-Jensen.

Exhibitions, book and DVD/BD publications complement his field of activity.
