Facility Tour to Alba WEEE·PARK

Did you know that around 70 000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) are generated in Hong Kong every year?

If not treated properly, such waste is hazardous to the environment and human health. Moreover, precious raw materials like metal can be returned to the value chain through the process. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Treatment and Recycling Facility (WEEE·PARK) operated by the ALBA IWS joint venture, applies state-of-the art technology from Germany and is one of Asia's most modern plants for the disposal of refrigerators, cathode ray tube and flat screen TVs, personal computers, washing machines and air conditioners into valuable secondary raw materials while controlling the management of the hazardous materials that are contained in this equipment.

At this occasion, delegates will meet Mr. Nigel Mattravers, Director and General Manager of ALBA IWS and Mr. Tobias Huinink, Business Director Asia of ALBA Group Asia. The tour of the facility will be guided by Nigel and Tobias, who were instrumental in bringing a very demanding tendering process to a successful conclusion in 2015. They have many valuable insights to share from their experience with this project, which is likely the first, where a German-led consortium won a major infrastructure project in Hong Kong. Members will learn about the many recoverable components in different types of electric and electronic waste and see some of the processes in operation. Another aspect to learn more about is the plant management's emphasis on its corporate social responsibility, be it in recruitment or caring for the underprivileged.

Seeing is believing. If anything, this visit will be educational in nature for all participants. The sheer volume of appliances being stacked high in the factory halls is stunning, yet only a fraction of what is disposed of every day in our households and offices!

The visits will be followed by a networking with GCC South China Members, which offers a great opportunity for delegates to mingle and make new connections.
