After a century of unrestricted plastics consumption, the world has now seen the devastating environmental effects of unsustainable plastics production, use and disposal. The chemical industry has undergone a shift in ideology over the past hundred years – from plastics advocate to a solution provider for the plastics circular economy.

Changing how the world interacts with plastic is critical to ensure environment, ecosystems and economies are maintained. Many of the concepts, technologies and materials needed for reaching sustainability goals are likely to come from the chemicals sector and in particular, companies like BASF. Carola Richter, President, South & East Asia, ASEAN and Australia & New Zealand at BASF explores how the chemical industry is enabling the circular economy and making plastics more sustainable.
