25 years ago, Francis Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington were famously arguing over the world's future development: Would it be one world under liberal democracy or a world of competing systems and cultural hemispheres?

Dr. Alexander Görlach, acclaimed analyst and author, aims to answer this question in the light of current events. In his latest book "Homo Empathicus. On Scapegoats, Populists and How to Save Democracy" he analyses the political and societal momentum of populist resentments versus liberal empathy, and lays out why the world order we know will prevail.

Alexander Görlach is a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, New York, an affiliate in the "In Defense of Democracy" program by the F. D. Roosevelt Foundation at Harvard, a Senior Associate at the Institute on Religion and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, and Honorary Professor of Ethics and Theology at the University of Lüneburg. His work focuses on narratives of identity, politics and religion, the future of democracy, secularism, pluralism and cosmopolitanism. In the academic year 2017-2018 he was invited as a visiting scholar to City University Hong Kong and National Taiwan University. He is among others an op-ed contributor for the New York Times and Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Alexander Görlach is also the founder of the debate magazine The European, which he ran as editor-in-chief from 2009 until 2015.
