German Business in Hong Kong 2022 |
|

|
Each year, GIC and GCC conduct a joint Business Confidence Survey in order to gauge the current sentiment and outlook among members of the German business community in Hong Kong. The latest survey gathered a total of 109 responses over a two-week period between May and June 2022. The lowest number of registered answers for any of the questions included in this summary report was 93 (with the exception of specific follow-up questions on companies’ relocation plans).
Key highlights - Most respondents assess Hong Kong’s business environment in 2022 as worse than 2021 in terms of attraction of overseas talent, regional headquarters location, and political climate.
- Respondents’ business confidence in Hong Kong gets an all-time low average score of 2.30 (on a scale from 1 to 5). Companies’ overseas stakeholders are perceived to be even less confident in Hong Kong (2.09).
- 33% of surveyed companies are considering a partial or full relocation in the next 12 months. The most popular alternative: Singapore.
- 44% of surveyed companies have lost staff due to the Covid-related restrictions of the past two years; 48% see emigration as their biggest challenge in retaining staff.
- 68% of respondents rank the resumption of quarantine-free international travel as the top priority for their business, ahead of quarantine-free China travel (21%).

... Hong Kong’s Jumbo Kingdom used to be the largest floating restaurant in the world? |
| |
This month, Hong Kong bid farewell to one of its most iconic cultural landmarks: The Jumbo Floating Restaurant and adjacent Tai Pak Floating Restaurant, jointly known as Jumbo Kingdom. Jumbo Floating Restaurant was opened in 1976 by late business tycoon Stanley Ho, while Tai Pak had operated since the 1950s and was later acquired by Ho in the 1980s.
During its heyday, Jumbo Kingdom was claimed to be the largest floating restaurant in the world, serving local seafood and dim sum specialties to as many as 2,300 guests on a floor area of 45,000 square feet. Located in the Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter, Jumbo Kingdom was one of Hong Kong’s most recognisable tourist attractions during its 44 years of service. Its eccentric appearance in the style of a Chinese imperial palace not only attracted prominent visitors such as Queen Elizabeth II, former US President Jimmy Carter, and Hollywood star Tom Cruise, but also made it a popular filming location for several blockbusters, such as the 1974 James Bond instalment The Man With The Golden Gun.
In March 2020, the coronavirus pandemic forced the Jumbo Kingdom to close its doors for, as it turned out, the final time. Due to the high maintenance costs, parent company Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises eventually announced in late May 2022 that the vessel would be towed out of Hong Kong and delivered to a new operator overseas. However, the Jumbo Kingdom’s final voyage to an undisclosed location in Cambodia came to a tragic end only days after its departure, when the vessel reportedly encountered “adverse conditions” and capsized near the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea on 19 June. And thus, after 46 years, Hong Kong’s most famous floating restaurant is floating no more. |
