The Road to Sustainable Transport in Hong Kong |
Hong Kong is home to one of the densest and most heavily used road networks in the world. As of June 2020, the Highways Department reported some 787,000 licensed vehicles on nearly 2,130 km of roads across the territory – more than 370 per kilometre on average. City planners and developers have therefore increased their efforts in recent years to reduce traffic congestion and road risks by shifting their strategy towards an increasingly data-driven, efficient, and environmentally friendly urban transport system. |

... football has a long history in Hong Kong? |
| |
With the Euro 2020 tournament currently underway, what better time for a few fun facts about competitive football in Hong Kong! It all began in 1886 with the foundation of Hong Kong Football Club, representing both association and rugby football. One of the oldest clubs in Asia, its home pitch (pictured) and training grounds are located inside the oval of the Happy Valley Racecourse. In recent years, the HKFC men’s football team has been competing in the First Division where it just finished the 2020-21 season unbeaten in first place.
Established in 1908, the Hong Kong First Division League is the oldest football league in Asia. South China AA are currently the most successful club in league history with 41 titles between 1924 and 2013. Following the introduction of the Hong Kong Premier League in 2014, the First Division is now paradoxically the second-highest league in Hong Kong. The 2020-21 Premier League season wrapped up in May with defending champion Kitchee SC securing back-to-back titles as well as a spot in the group stage of the Asian Champions League.
Hong Kong is also represented in international football. The Hong Kong Football Association has been the sport's official governing body since 1914, and a member of FIFA and the newly-founded AFC since 1954 – the year of Germany's first World Cup title. Two years later, Hong Kong hosted the first ever Asian Cup, finishing third. As of June 2021, the Hong Kong Men’s and Women’s teams are ranked 144th and 76th, respectively, in the FIFA world rankings. |
