…Hong Kong has the highest life expectancy in the world?
…Hong Kong has the highest life expectancy in the world?
As of 2023, the average life expectancy for Hong Kong is estimated at 85.3 years according to the United Nations’ World Population Prospects. This puts the SAR in first place worldwide, ahead of Japan (85.0), Macao (84.7), Switzerland (84.3), and Singapore (84.1). The World Bank has been ranking Hong Kong first in life expectancy for both women and men since 2010.

Factors often associated with the increasing longevity of Hong Kong’s residents are the city’s rapid economic development throughout the 20th century, its subtropical climate with relatively few extreme weather phenomena, as well as the advanced infrastructure and public healthcare system. At the same time, however, some health experts have noted that the younger generation of Hongkongers has become more prone to unhealthy eating and living habits in recent years, not least due to the Covid-19 pandemic, increasing the overall risk of non-communicable diseases.

Since 2018, the government has been promoting the “Strategy and Action Plan to Prevent and Control NCD in Hong Kong” to lower the occurrence of non-communicable diseases with the help of nine targets, including the reduction of salt intake, tobacco use, and physical inactivity.
